There’s a huge pet overpopulation problem, and the responsible pet owner will sterilize her pets as young as possible to avoid “accidents,” right? Well, not so fast!
Many veterinarians already feel that early spay/neuter can be detrimental to growth and development, but a new study takes this a few steps further. Researchers at the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation, headquartered in West Lafayette, Indiana, at the Purdue Research Center, in studying female Rottweilers, found that if you take out ovaries before 4 years of age you cut longevity short an average of 1.4 years and decrease the likelihood of reaching exceptional longevity by 3-fold. While the study does not take other factors like diet into consideration, it makes a strong point for keeping females intact for health and longevity. Management by the owner then becomes the main focus in preventing pregnancy.
